With Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, SoundCloud, Pandora, and so many other music streaming services, is there room for one more? The Arizona Lottery hopes so. It is introducing a new mobile app that combines music with daily cash raffles.

Ultimate Playlist players” listen to songs, rate the songs, then they’re entered into daily raffles and a drawing with a $20,000 jackpot. So far, the Arizona Lottery is not sharing many details about Ultimate Playlist.

AZ Lottery marketing app as a ‘free, non-lottery game’

The Arizona Lottery has been going strong for more than 40 years. It has provided billions of dollars to education, conservation, human services, public safety and the arts. Up until the last few years, it was one of the only ways to gamble in The Grand Canyon State. Sports betting, both online and retail, is now available to Arizonians.

The Lottery describes Ultimate Playlist as “a free-to-play mobile app, raffle game, music discovery and song promotional tool.” The app will be available for both Android and iPhone devices.

Ultimate Playlist will offer 40 new songs every day for users to listen to and then rate. While using the app, users are entered into a daily cash raffle and drawings for a jackpot. The jackpot is for $20,000, while there’s $2,000 worth of raffle prizes.

The Arizona Lottery has made it crystal clear this game is a “free, non-lottery game.” That seems contradictory, but the rules on what state lotteries in the US are allowed to do in terms of online gaming are extremely strict. That is why the Arizona Lottery is marketing the app as a non-lottery game despite the listener being able to win raffles and receive chances to win a cash jackpot.

Ultimately, it is a lottery in name only. Legally speaking, it is a music platform with free-to-play games on it.

Arizona Lottery has given just a few details about the app

So far, the Arizona Lottery has not given specifics on the app, like types of music or featured artists. Rightsholder is a partner in the venture. According to its website, Rightsholder is “a brilliantly simple music rights search engine with music licensing and synchronization professionals in mind.”

Other than that, Ultimate Playlist is still a mystery. It will be interesting to learn the details of the app and, ultimately, see its impact on gaming and music streaming.
